Implementing Interleaving

An example of implementing interleaving would be to have the students do four examples. One example is worked out for the students with an explanation of the process used to get the answer. In this manner, the student will see how to solve the problem and the thinking process used so they can start the process of self-regulation. The problem with its answer is “interleaved” amongst the other problems.

The teacher can also use interleaving in the classroom during student independent work time. One way for this to occur would be for students to present the answers to their tablemate. After the students spend X amount of time working on their project, they can turn to their neighbor to explain what they have done. The tablemate will have answers to the problems that were assigned and check to see if the student did the work correctly.

The interleaving allows students to self-regulate their learning as they see the answer and use that knowledge to modulate and monitor their own learning. The correct answer can also serve as an example for the student in solving the problem and the thought process involved in its resolution.
